It was a somewhat challenging cycle ride into Leicester on Friday, with compacted ice and snow on the roads, and frozen snow on the cycle way that I use for most of my journey, the trees lining the cycle way looking gorgeous, sunlit snow laden frostiness against the blue sky. I teetered along, wobbling slowly along the path, hardly daring to use my brakes, as more confident folk cycled past me, especially those on mountain bikes, with their wide studded tyres. It was payback time – with my lighter-weight bike and higher gears, I’m usually the one overtaking. As I left the cycle path to head into the city centre I became aware of a rhythmic creaking noise, that didn’t seem to match either my wheel speed or the rotation of my pedals. I eliminated the idea that it could be my knees, and decided that either the bumpy ride over snow had loosened something, or maybe ice was trapped where ice shouldn’t be. I turned to look down at my back wheel, where the noise seemed to be coming from, and saw that I was being closely followed by a lady on an old, and very creaky, bike.
In my case it would have been my knees . . . and I'm on a cycle tour in Tuscany in 4 months (oh panic). Love the light in this photo, the wonderful winter light.
