Dusk was upon us when we set out on yesterday evenings dog walk, and so I took my camera more in optimism than expecting to photograph anything. The sun had already set, leaving just a pink ribbon to the west, separating the horizon from a darkening sky. Although no work takes place in the quarry at weekends, strategic lights are left on around the buildings, below the footpath the skirts the quarry edge. With no tripod I resorted to a convenient fence post. It was too dark for autofocus to do anything other than create whirring noises as the lens tried to find something visible to focus on, and so I resorted to manual focus. At this point I discovered that the reading specs that I normally carry were at home, and since I couldn’t focus on the camera screen, I hadn’t a clue whether the camera was focusing on the buildings. But I did my best, and then discovered that with a bit of careful aiming I could give autofocus something to concentrate on. I can’t remember whether this was a manual or autofocus attempt.
