A terrace of terraced houses in the Spinney Hill area of Leicester. Like many cities Leicester has thousands of these Victorian houses, originally built for workers at local factories, which in Leicester would mostly have been textile related. The design of these houses varies subtly between localities, but tends to be the same within each city. I have never been in any of these particular "two-up-two-down" houses, but I know I will enter the front door into the front room, separated from the back room by a wall and door beneath steep stairs crossing the house, accessed from the back room. At some point the house will have been extended by a later "back addition" when kitchens were added. The bathroom may be behind the kitchen, or more likely above it.
My Grandad had one of these in Leicester (just off Hinkley rd, Luther St I think...) your description was just perfect except when he passed away 30 years ago he still didn't have a bathroom - but had a strip wash EVERY morning in the kitchen, toilet was outside in the yard!!! Memories - always great to have them!!!
We had a lot of textile mills in our area. And the homes were built close together but not like this and they were actual houses. But you can still see a sameness to the houses before additions. Now the mills are being converted to housing use.
