After a 2 hour 70 mile boat trip from Campbell River, Vancouver Island, over to the mainland, we travelled with guides, on dirt roads, to find some Grizzlies. After a few sightings of distant bears we came across a mother and three cubs fishing for salmon. Mum would pull out a fish and dispatch it with an audible clop of jaws, before tucking in. The 2 year old cubs, on the other hand, found the process more challenging, shaking the prey as a dog shakes a rat, eventually killing the fish and eating it. We watched, fascinated, for an hour, not noticing the adult male behind us, just a few meters away on our side of the river. The guides were keeping an eye on him though, and he kept his distance. It was an amazing experience, truly deserving the commonly used phrase over here - awesome!
