Haldon Belvedere by sjc88

Haldon Belvedere

It is no more than a 3 sided tower overlooking Exe estuary, Exeter and the surrounding estuary towns and villages. It was built in 1788 by Sir Robert Palk as a memorial to his friend Major-General Stringer Lawrence. (Originally called Lawrence Castle).
This brings back memories of traffic queues on Haldon Hill ( or Holdon) at the weekends on the way to Torquay! Funny how we always remember summer being beach weather!

It's an imposing building though it is a shame it is surrounded by tarmac

@susale R @moxy @virtualbrownie @pennystot thank you for your comments. This side is the only one where the ground is tarmac the other 2 sides are all grassed, this is the approach from road. The reason why I suspect is that it is possible to hire the castle for weddings etc. As for visiting you can do more than that! There is a penthouse apartment that can be rented..... So maybe the fairytale could come true?
