Black Mushroom ????

I have never seen one of these. Any ideas ?

The ferns look very familiar--we have them everywhere--but the black thing?? I have no idea. It isn't skat is it?

@stcyr1up Skat is yucky black animal droppings like from raccoons, possum, armadillos & all these Florida critters that share their lives with our yards :-) They usually pile them up in a ball.

@cimes1 Thanks, I did not know that. Dictionary has a much different meaning : A German bidding card game. I'll have to look closer, as I don't think it's a card game going on there. LOL

@stcyr1up Ooooops, was relying on my memory and spelled it wrong...should be scat. In the meantime, I googled "black mushroom" and the 1st photo in the images looks very similar to yours. It was taken in the Smokey Mountains. Check it out.....

@cimes1 Yup, it has a stem !! This mushroom is about 4 in. in diameter, and sits on a 4 in. stem.
