I have been lucky enough to find pellets in various places. At Cairnpapple the pellet was full of beetle casings, on Skye it was small white bones and grey fur, on the island of Rum it was broken limpet shells in one and white curly feathers in another.
I have no idea if the pellets I have found are owls or not, in fact on Rum I can almost guarantee not. But raptors obviously have the ability to identify protein even in a shell.
@cancarrier Yes that reminds me of when I was asked to write an article on pellets where my researches indicated that many surprising bird species produce pellets including kingfishers and even blackbirds
