Day 068, Year 4 - Corton Clouds by stevecameras

Day 068, Year 4 - Corton Clouds

Another long exposure, my current fad, which I think I might be getting a bit bored of. I'm lacking in inspiration and falling back on an easy shot. I tried a new beach on this day, one I haven't been to in years, but couldn't figure out what to do. I tried a lot of different positions along the beach but in a way it was pretty much the same shot. I also met up with @aprilstumpff yesterday and talked a lot about editing, and asked her to edit a couple of my RAW files. I must admit I ended up a bit bummed out because her edits were lovely and dare I say it, better, and I realised (again) that I seem to want to really over-crank the colours, and contrast to a point where the scene doesn't seem real. Most of the time, the subject doesn't need that much editing, but I seem to be in a pattern of tweaking my shots like this.

It's funny because many of the photographers I follow on Instagram have a style of editing that is so subtle, and although they look edited and artistic, it is so gentle that it still looks real. I think the trick is to create a shot that looks real and familiar but has the artistic edge to it to make it stand above a simple 'snap' of the scene. I'm not sure if this makes sense but I think I know what I mean.....or am I just going mad..?

One thing I also realised in talking to @aprilstumpff is that I shoot in a very singular way specifically for 365, and when I am out somewhere I don't just shoot for the enjoyment of it. I tend to shoot until I have a shot and then I stop, rather than just wander with my camera. It really made me think about why I take pictures and what kind of pictures I want to take.

I ended up leaving the RAW file I was focused on, and using this one instead as I (almost :) like what I have done with it. It was very blue because of the ND filter, underexposed too slightly but I like the foreground and the little spot of daylight I have put in over the wooden defences.

3 good things:

1 - Catching up on a backlog of podcasts
2 - Nice to get out to somewhere new
3 - Making homemade Toblerone flavoured fudge that evening...which happens to taste amazing! :)

Amazing!

Super!!!

Interesting commentary. I know I have a tendency to over-edit my shots, especially landscape. I can hardly ever get it back to how I remember it. ;)
I've really been enjoying your LE series.

I love this one. Its rather magical. I think that just shooting for 365 can sometimes take away the pleasure of it that's why I have decided not to stress over taking a photo each day.

This kind of pictures are always beautiful to me! If nothing else they remind me of summer. I will have to try this one day, when I finally get to the sea - can't wait.

this is a real learning experience for you...thank you for sharing...it's very interesting...i like this shot..it's a strong image and i like the way you've used the vignette...i used to do a lot of images the way you described...i just loved the power of making it all strong and dramatic when editing...i think it's a common thing...especially with big outdoors shots...and you seem to do big outdoors shots... :o) ...maybe change your focus to closer work...this shot works for me...fav..

It's very lovely - like an Athena poster in the 80's!

You could live with this very easily on your walls, would look great in a trendy, modern pad!

I think I know what you mean. I am struggling too. There are so many photographers out there, so how does one stand out? Do something different, or just a bit off? Editing, the shot, ????
I like the surreal look of your long exposures, they create a mood.

Great shot, my kind of photo...

I like your long exposure shots, some have a 'unreal' look to them but I think the drama is great!

Gorgeous long exposure

This certainly has an unreal quality - looks like it could be the backdrop to a Disney film. It is really eye catching and suggestive of escaping to a dream land. I know what you mean about questioning why we photograph. I have been doing this today and yesterday too and got quite confused about why I am even doing the 365 project. At least it gets us thinking, questioning and looking for a different approach from time to time - all of which are good things.

It's always nice meeting up for coffee and getting your perspective on things. I always learn something new from friends. :)

Surreal, eye-catching

Wonderful shot

why has nobody mentioned the fudge ;-)

Exquisite Steve! Just breathtaking!

Interesting to read your thoughts on your photos, as I really like what you do. Your architecture shots especially, to me, are wonderful. And I do like these sea, long exposure scenes. But then, I also use HDR and like sharp color and form. What's tricky is to do that and not have it appear overprocessed. This shot is wonderful, by the way. I like the range of soft blues.

Beautiful soft scene. Toblerone flavoured fudge, sounds amazing.

Thank you all very much for your lovely comments and FAVs. I have really thought about all this over the last few days but it's a god thing. I wandered yesterday and tried to find something very simple and not focus on something so big and epic, not every day anyway.
I am glad you guys like the shot :)
March 13th, 2016
@stevecameras ...i think i'm going to have to google toblerone fudge too... ;o)

I have yet to try long exposure shots and I think you take amazing shots. I like the editing you give to your shots but understand that variety is needed. Hope you will find the joy in taking photos (or find again). I like the different shades of blue and the processing in this photo is more subtle than your previous shots (but I liked those too). Beautiful capture..fav

I completely forgot to add...the Toblerone fudge was awesome!!!
And so simple...my fudge recipe is the same each time.
400g of chocolate, in this case the large 400g Toblerone bar, with a tin of condensed milk.
You melt the chocolate in a pan slowly, and then add the condensed milk.
I have done it with a bar of dairy milk and added Smarties too for extra texture. Some people say add icing sugar to make it slightly harder but I have always had a good texture that remains gooey but firm.

@juleshoogstraanderson Thank you. The LE shots are easy if you have a tripod or a clamp to secure the camera to a post or rail. to effectively get smooth water and clouds you want to be shooting over 30 seconds, so sometimes a ND filter helps. I have the LEE BigStopper but it's not essential. If the scene is dark enough and you can program in an exposure time, or use a remote shutter release in Bulb mode then you can shoot for as long as you want. :)

If you know this already, forgive me for teaching you to suck eggs :)

Interesting musings Steve - as I travel along my photographic journey, over the years I keep coming back to the question too-- "why am I taking a photo, and if I find photography enjoyable, exactly what is it that makes it so" I agree 100% about the goal of editing, and would add that ultimately it is about how light interacts with earthly objects, and how that image then connects with the viewer. Ohh that's deeeep!
I am thinking currently that good editing is about complementing the way the light behaved in the captured scene.

The light, and shape created by the pebbles in this shot is lovely. LE has a lovely sense of calm that is appealing.

Lol...no Steve I had no idea how to do long exposure shots and really appreciate your explanation. I have the tripod, so I could do the set up, invest in some filters and take the shots with some success( I think). My problem would be how to put the shots together in the editing programs. That completely boggles my mind. I have to find some good info on the web to do this or wait till I get a new laptop, my other one's to slow and old, that I use my iPad for editing instead. Anyways I started to babble, I really appreciate you taking the time to offer some advice and teach me something new...thanx :)

Stunning!

@juleshoogstraanderson Jules.
I would say don't worry too much about editing, you should only need to do one file at a time. And apps like Snapseed would be ok for editing this as you can use it to change the colour temperature and boost shadows etc. You may not even need filters if your camera shoots up to 30 seconds exposures. You just need to wait long enough for the light to be low enough for the camera to need more exposure time which will then give you the silky water/clouds effect. :)

@ltodd Thank you for commenting. And yes I understand completely about the editing process complimenting the scnee. I always think I want to enhance it to bring out the best in it, but frequently feel as though I have changed the scene, sometimes for the best and sometimes for the worst.
But having said all tis, I think if we continue to question ourselves, even be our own worst critic then ultimately it might help to become better, if that's what we want - which I do. I see other people's work and think "I want to do that" so it's a case of trying to understand why and how those shots look like they do and go and figure out how to do it ourselves.
Maybe :))

@alka Thank you :)

Interesting commentary (yours and the reply's). If I had taken this shot I would be thrilled, but is that because it is so different to what I do (but would love to do)? I think sometimes we are hard on ourselves, but that is not a bad thing, that is how we learn...cliche I know but I believe it!
March 23rd, 2016
@ukandie1 I think so too.
I have thought about all this a lot over the last few weeks. I think I was clearly in a very thoughtful place when I took this, considering what it is I do or don't like about photography. And it's easy to get a little bit too obsessed with getting a shot for the day rather than just taking pictures because it's fun to use the camera, and capture something. Having wrote all I did I look at this shot and am really happy with it. It's getting to be along the lines of the 'fine art' type stuff I really like which would go ok on a wall or a postcard. Not quite but getting there :)
