Today was the actual birthday of my daughter Alexis. After celebrating with her school friends yesterday at her home, I drove her to Norfolk this afternoon for a few days with me, my folks and some of my family. We got back, headed back out for a burger dinner, then came back for a small slice of sponge cake. It's a bit corny but candlelight is always fun to shoot with. It's so simple but can either fail badly or help to make a lovely portrait in my experience. I always think of Joseph Wright and his art work which features candlelit portraits, particularly 'An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump' which is one of my favourite paintings.

It's mad to think the 8 years has gone by so quickly. We had some old photos playing on a loop on the tv yesterday for her party with her friends, and it's funny how they bring back such vivid memories. I'm always keen to make some more each time I take a photo, and if I am able in a few years to differentiate the years then great. If not, at least I will have hopefully documented the transformation from teeny person, to a grown up.
I just wish the whole process would slow down a little....... :)

Thank you for the link to the artist that inspired your shot, I can see why you like it. Not sure you will want to hear this, but this shot shows the young lady that Alexis is about to become, where your other shots still show her as being a young child. Beautifully done, like all good portraits it is all about the eyes!

@ukandie1 I am really happy with her eyes in this shot. There are three others I posted on Facebook which show more smiley faces but I really like this one. And yes I know it makes her look a little older..... :)
