There is a wildlife sanctuary near my workplace that I'm fortunate to be able to visit at lunchtime. I think wildlife sanctuary basically means "a bunch of marshes where ducks hang out." But this guy was pretty cool looking and I was able to get fairly close to him until he freaked and took off (I posted that photo on my 365 album). I know nothing at all about wildlife. I think it's a bird of some kind.
@pcoulson@tuya Thanks Claire, thanks Peter for the suggestions. I had thought it was a snowy egret myself, but like I said my knowledge of birds is about the same as my knowledge of Ming Dynasty history. There's an Audubon house at the sanctuary. I'll get confirmation from them.
