tickled pink

this weekend is the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation's "run for the cure" event. for the last eight years, i have participated to raise funds for the breast cancer research, in memory of a young filipina domestic helper i knew personally who, at 27 died of breast cancer. hers was a long and sad story but she inspired me to run five kilometres in this event every year. over the course of the eight years, i've ran not just for her but for a few friends who survived breast cancer.

i won't be running this year because last summer, i have already asked my friends to sponsor me in the heart and stroke event and i don't really want to abuse my friends' generosity. what i did was to give a good amount of sponsorship for another friend who is doing the run on sunday.

the blue pin you see here with the pink ribbon is also a pin being used by another breast cancer research entity. it used to be that all breast cancer research initiatives use the pink ribbon as a symbol for the cause and their fundraising. however, over the last few years they had a war over 'copyright' issues, and that sort of made me sour about contributing a large amount of money. when they have settled their differences, i would go back to asking people for pledges for me to run. after all, we're trying to get rid of the same enemy.

the blue pin represents a pair of blue denim pants and it is so designed because their research is concentrated on finding the gene(s) that cause(s) breast cancer in women. our office sponsors the fundraising by letting the lawyers and staff wear denim jeans on a tuesday if they contributed a small sum, $5, to the cause.
Great causes both of them Nice reminder for all of us to do what we can

Great photo and story. I like the denim "genes". Nice focus. Good to hear that your company does that.

A very nice ribbon to finish off the month! I just picked up a little pin to send to my mother-in-law who is a breast cancer survivor. I need to send a little something to my former "roomie" the other teacher I shared my classroom with who is also a breast cancer survivor. Nice shot!

lovely shot and story and whilst it is great that so many peole are starting to survive breast cancer you would think in the 21st century we might be a little further forward in prevention.
