sunday morning we passed by a town in ontario called elmira which is home to a large mennonite community. we passed by a small non-descript one-storey structure with a large parking lot for horses and their buggies. wow! all the horses were very well behaved. turned out it was their church and the folks were attending service.
there was a sad event though as when they were coming out of church, two of the horses were on the ground, their harnesses must've tangled, according to partner. i was telling partner that i'd bet someone would have a cell phone and had probably called the vet or something or a back-up buggy. partner was annoyed and assured me that these people live without the luxuries 'we' have. a few minutes later three buggies arrived. so i asked him, how can they come fast? two were obviously to replace the out of commissioned buggies and one had a 'doctor' like looking dude, you know, top hat, round glasses, well-dressed, just like in the movies. so, i asked partner, how could have they known so fast? or maybe they have a phone inside the church, the rotary dial type. what do you think?
Love scenes like this which have you gazing into the picture to see all the detail that's been included. The autumn leaves also add a beauty all of their own.
What a fabulous capture .... love the whole comp!! It all looks so orderly to me. Very calm atmosphere. I wonder about the "phone" too. The Amish around here either use no phone or have an old one inside their barns. So there is some kind of communication to the "outside world."
In my state we have a large amount of Amish in the northern part of the state, I was shocked to find out how many of them are killed while driving their buggies drunk.. Great shot
It depends- the Amish wouldn't have either- rotary or cell. Old Order Mennonites live in a similar fashion to the Amish, but they might have a phone in the barn for emergencies, or a tractor for plowing the fields however it would not have a cushion on the seat or rubber on the tires. Other Mennonite communities are completely modern, but you wouldn't see buggies there, so my guess is if you're sure you've got some Old Order Mennonites here, then there may have been a phone available for emergencies, or someone ran and got the vet rather quickly.
