i used to sing that song to my two youngest siblings when they were still toddlers whenever i was tasked with making sure they take a nap after lunch. it's funny, when i was young i resented all those little chores and tasks i had to do, and often times i wished i wasn't the eldest. in the culture i grew up in, the eldest girl in the family would take on the role of 'surrogate mother' to the rest of her siblings, especially when the family was poor. sometimes, the girl would end up a spinster and would be taking care of everyone for the rest of her life and would be dependent on her other siblings for money. or, sometimes it's the other way around, everyone's dependent on her emotionally and financially, even when her siblings had their own families.

As the oldest daughter in my family I was also called upon to watch my two younger sisters quite often. In some ways I thought they were pesky and didn't listen. Funny- they thought I was bossy!! Being the oldest sibling is not as demanding in our culture- but in some families the ties are just a deep. Instead of singing, I used to draw pictures for my sisters to color. I also made up games for them to play. I guess we all have an entertainment trick or two. This is a very pretty necklace- lovely capture and strong memories.
