a whiter shade of pale by summerfield

a whiter shade of pale

"in a monochrome photograph the composition is determined entirely by the tones, i.e., the different light values and intensities within the hue become very important." - photography and the art of seeing by freeman patterson.

i took this photograph last sunday whilst sitting on the balcony of the house in london. i like the contrast of the tree trunk's rough texture and uneven lines, against the house on the other side of the road, its defined lines (windows, roof) and smooth walls. the varying tones of white, grey and black determine those shapes and textures and help the viewer's eye in identifying them and in our imagining how the picture would look like if it was in colour, which, if you must know, does not look much different than what you see here, save a very indistinct green hue of the leaves and rusty shade of the roof tiles.

the month's almost over. at lunch time i went over to the dollar store and find that there was already an abundance of Christmas decors although they also had the hallow'een stuff at the front.

thank you for your kind views and comments; know that i very much appreciate all of them.
I love the light tones and black and white processing with a little punch. Wonderful composition.

Its nicer than B&W I reckon - sort of has a pale greeny shade to it. The tree trunk is fabulous!

@cathrinemitch - thank you, cathrine. i'm pretty sure that you and Christine @k1w1 took a few shots of the CN tower. they have a contest running until September 8. i'm going to review my CN tower shots and maybe i will submit one or two pics. you guys should, too. here's the link: http://www.cntower.ca/en-ca/what-s-up/now-at-the-cn-tower/cn-tower-summer-photo-challenge.html

The lines and textures in the tree are lovely. I like the shallow dof.

I think I have a couple of sunrise shots some place that have the CN tower in them so I will check them out. I also want to get to Toronto Island sometime soon. @northy has a totally AMAZING night shot that has the CN Tower in it.

@k1w1 - i'm going to the islands on monday to catch the airshow. so if you and cathy @cathrinemitch are feeling 'spontaneous' it's best time to come and if you do, must bring the tripod. :-) so how about it?

I'm not sure I'm well enough for that just yet :( Maybe I can see how I'm doing Monday morning and perhaps come but right now I'm going to have to say no :(
