get pushed #76 - new beginnings

mary @m9f9l is my partner this week for the get pushed challenge. her challenge is "a shot depicting new beginnings/rebirth (in honor of the new year!)"

hockey is canada's national game and every young boy or girl growing up is all too familiar of the game. canadians live, eat and breathe hockey. it is "our game". we are the best in this sport (although our junior team is providing this wrong in the worlds meet that's on-going somewhere in another cold part of the world). even those whose roots came from elsewhere in the world, if you grow up here, you've got to love and/or play hockey. they play it in outdoor rinks, arenas, on the street (car!) and when the nearby lake freezes as does cootes bay pictured here, it's all fair game for the hockey lovers. the rougher their beginnings are, the better player they become.

pictured here are young boys getting ready with their skates, talking about "sidney" and "maple leafs" and "the sens" and "gretzky" and "bobby orr" as their parents watch oftentimes holding a cup of "timmies", short for "tim horton's" who was a long time ago one of the high profile hockey players in toronto.

every boy who loves and plays hockey identifies with their hockey idols, wears jerseys that bear their idol's numbers or their favourite hockey teams. and almost everyone (almost, not quite) dream of making it big someday, taking inspiration from the hockey greats.

this is one of hockey's more humble beginnings - youngsters playing the game to while away the cold winter weekends. they will develop skills and knowledge of the game from these humble beginnings.

Lovely shot. Over here 'hockey' usually refers to field hockey and ice hockey is very much a minority sport.

hahaha I definitely thought that!! I was just thinking about taking A ice skating the other day. WHen I was little we had a pond nearby and we anxiously waited for it to freeze over each year so we could skate...I have yet to find one where I live now (only 60 minutes away). I wonder if it is too big a liability for the towns.

Love the history you providing of our (Canadians) favourite past time. I remember when I was younger they tried putting figure skates on me but I want to skate with the brothers and play hockey therefore I got used boys ice skates. My father my brothers and I made a skating rink in the back yard large enough to play hockey. Girls didn't play then but I did with my brothers and their friends. Your picture has brought back memories of our family playing hockey while my mother sat by the window in our house cheering us on. Those were the days. Thank you for posting great capture of Canada's favourite past time.

Captures the theme brilliantly
Happy New Year Vikki, how are you feeling? Better now?

This reminds me of my childhood- although I was not into hockey and barely kept my balance on ice skates- but just a simple group of kids out skating. Nice shot- and great write-up too.
