clothed in colours of the rainbow

my parents used to tell us a story about me getting lost one day. i was found in the next town by a peddler who regularly brought his wares to our house. i had a vivid recollection of what happened even though i was told it wasn't possible because i was only four.

my older brother had a book in which a story said that at the end of the rainbow is a pot of gold that was being guarded by a kindly wise elf. the story said that the elf would only give gold to those who were really in need and has a pure heart. although i didn't think my father had a pure heart, i was pretty sure my mother was. my parents were working class people and money was always short. so i thought that if i got just a few pieces of gold, it would help us a lot especially that i can ask for books to read.

so one afternoon, as the sun seemed to hang in the sky forever, i looked in the other direction and saw this beautiful vivid rainbow. the end of it looked so near, probably just beyond the rice fields. it would be just a short walk. so i walked down the street and crossed the narrow bridge on the river to reach the rice field. i kept looking back to gauge how far i was getting from our house. the farther i thought i was, the closer the end of the rainbow seemed so i kept walking. when the sun had set i reached the "end" but because it was already dark, there was no more rainbow. i had a ribbon in my dress that was almost falling off so i tore it off and placed it on the ground, to mark where i thought the end of the rainbow was thinking i'd come back the next morning to ask the elf for the gold. then the old man found me and brought me home. no one believed i had gone to the end of the rainbow and i was not allowed to go outside the next day.

for five plus two's rainbow theme this week.

ps: i am fully clothed behind the rainbow scarf. i just happen to have nice curves! :-P
Interesting photo and story. A precocious and determined child, you were. Thanks for this.

The Yellow Brick Road has nothing on this story! Is your middle name, Dorothy? I like the shadowy form on the other side of the rainbow!

You were a very determined young lady! I had a book called the Rackety-Packety House. After reading it I was convinced that every time I left my room my dolls would come to life. I spent a lot of time trying to catch them at play, but they always figured out I was coming and I never caught them. I wonder what I might have done if I knew and understood what a security camera was...

I got there once, but then the light was treasure enough.

This story is worth being a movie script!

And your story could be a great children's book too. :)

What a lovely image and story Vikki!!! You should indeed turn it into a children's book as Nova said. The story not the photo - sexy rainbow mama should not be in a children's book :) ;) Just lovely.

What a poignant story and I totally believe you remember every bit of it. I have memories from when I was only two so I know it's possible! The photo is a spectacular image. I love the elusive shape that illustrates the ethereal quality of a rainbow too.

I really like the ethereal quality of the shot. I have some very vivid memories from around aged 4 or 5.
