children! children! by summerfield

children! children!

my sister takes it upon herself to teach arts and religion to the impoverished children around her depressed neighbourhood. some weekends there are sixty children but today only forty-five showed up. too bad for the fifteen absentees, i sponsored today's snacks.

partner and i had sent some items for these children, like spaghetti, pasta sauce, candies, tinned cookies, crayons, pencils, papers, etc. my sister cooked a large batch of spaghetti with meat sauce augmented by minced hotdogs. candies were portioned into little plastic bags for each child, as well as the cookies.

most of them were well-behaved, but others are quite aggressive and cheated by lining up for seconds whilst still eating their first bowl of spaghetti. one boy simply would go back to the end of the line! if you saw these children, the food was a special treat for them. the bowls were cleaned up good. i gave out a mini bar of reese's chocolate at the end of the meal.

some mothers would send their children in their best clothes, others just arrived in their everyday, almost tattered clothing.

next weekend, more spaghetti and cookies.
@traceyhn - tracey, my sister's "children" i'll write you a separate e-mail.

so many children in the Phillipines, they are really digging in to their snacks, the survival of the fittest instinct must be strong in the aggressive ones

@kali66 - most of these children would be out of school in another two or three years. as soon as they can be trusted to sell anything in the market, the parents would take advantage of that. most of the parents have some kind of addiction. it's the cycle of poverty. i think it should be made illegal in all countries of the world for children to be not in school. it is quite heart-breaking. thank you, kali.

It's so sad that there is still so much poverty in the world, it makes you appreciate what you have. Your sister must be such a caring person, she is doing a great job, and it's really nice of you to give all those things to the children. The photo is lovely, it's nice to see them enjoying their snacks.

Such a heartbreaking situation these children find themselves in.
