three locks found hanging together in a section of the humber bridge.
in my first week of arrival in canada, i wasted no time in trying to find a job. i'd hang around the downtown area to accustom myself with the layout of the city and checking out the addresses of the companies that had called and scheduled me for interview the following week.
one day, i was up town and waiting to cross at an intersection when a decent looking couple approached me and said hello and tried to engage me in conversation. i could tell by their accent that they were quebec-french. when i arrived here, having been in the company of british people for more than three years, i had a 'cute little english accent' and they asked if i came from england. you know how sometimes your brain is too busy soaking up so much around you that you can hear without listening or look without seeing? well in the middle of the small talk, i heard the phrase 'ménage à trois' and my mind was processing all the sights and sounds and what this couple was trying to tell me. my first instinct was that maybe i heard it wrong, but i looked at them and they were smiling and talking and the woman said something and again i heard the phrase. i thought i just didn't understand what they were saying so i politely asked for her to repeat what she said. and then i clearly heard "we would like to have a ménage à trois avec tois."
hahahaha! i was in shock for a few seconds before i could recover and told them, "are you f***ing crazy?" then the woman said, "no, we're not! you are so pretty we just like you instantly." i didn't think i was looking pretty with the way my face was so distorted in disgust. i gave both of them a once over and saw that the light has turned green and i could then cross. i told the woman, "f***ing no way, you're f***ing ugly and fat. find someone else." and as i walked away from them i yelled back "tabernac!!!" oh, if my mother was alive, she'd have me eat a whole bar of soap!
thank you for your kind views and comments; know that they are so much appreciated.
I don't know how you manage to attract these people! But the story does go well with the locks. Is this that new "fad" that people are doing all over the place- you buy a lock and put it on a chain link fence or something like it as a symbol of your love for someone or something like that? Makes for an interesting shot!
What a welcome to Canada. I have to agree with Ann. There is just something about you Vikki. I can just picture this whole scene playing out as you told us the story
This habit is catching up everywhere, from the looks of things. The more young lovers lock padlocks everywhere, the more we have broken marriages, unfortunately.
I'm not sure what my first reaction would be to such a proposal, but ultimately I'm sure it would be exactly what you did!. Very cool high key effect. This effect is one that I do battle to achieve.
lol. I think I would laugh really hard and awkwardly if someone asked me that. Kind of random thing to approach someone with....and kind of creepy. Nice shot though, did you hear about the Point Des Arts in Paris? One of the railings on the bridge fell off this past week due to the weight of all the love locks on it.
Well, you have locked them away with this shot! How incredible to have that happen! I wouldn't know what to say at the time but afterwards would be able to think of tons! Now, "tabernac"! I'll have to google this!
I read the title and thought it fitting for the photo, not fully realizing that each lock represents two people. Read the story, love your response. I like to read and Kathy Reichs is one of my favorite authors. I had to look up Tabernac when I began reading her books.
Awesome story. That's completely nuts!
