opal

opal is the birthstone for people born in october or those under the signs of scorpio and libra. it is the national gemstone of australia. an australian opal is a lot more expensive than any other.

above, the pendant set in fourteen karat gold has a milky opal, a lesser quality gemstone. beside it is a loose or unset australian opal which has a brighter colour than the lesser quality milky one on the pendant. (these gems are courtesy of my fiend yazmin of shahn jewellery. if you're in toronto and you need high quality and reasonably priced jewellery, shahn is the best place to go to.)

couldn't really shoot it more artistically as the store was about to close and i had to use my phone for the shot instead of my camera as we didn't want to upset the other merchants at the jewelry exchange.

thank you for your kind visits and comments; know that they are genuinely appreciated.

both beautiful but you really captured the fire in the australian opal very well!

I have always loved opals being a Libra and got a ring about 9 years ago in Australia. Unfortunately it now has three tiny holes in the opal! I just tell everyone that it has black diamonds in it! It looks dificult to shoot!

I would never have known that- I thought the milky ones were the only kind. Check that off for the learn something new every day quota!

Wow, I've never seen an Australian opal before. It's gorgeous. I love the milky opals. My grandmother's name was Opal, so my mom had several of them that she passed on to me.

I recall hearing as a child that it was bad luck to wear an opal if you didn't have an October birthday! That myth certainly wasn't started by the opal merchants!

I love opals of any kind and my birthstone is a Ruby which I don't care for at all so I use my brothers birthstone and decided I'm protected because I love an October child so much.

Beautiful pair of opals - such lovely colours inside them. I'm like Dixie - I prefer opals to my birthstone too!
