we learn new things everyday. and we learn more from doing the 365 project.
here's one of the bottles i got from the antique market yesterday morning. made of heavy crystal and holds a small amount of perfume, i'm guessing madame rochas (from what i remember from my 80's escapades). this is one of the "great" deals i got. i went back to the table quite a few times, holding this bottle in my hand. it was on a table with other old stuff, with a sign that indicated the items on that table were for $25 each. i know that when you go to places like antique markets or flea markets, you are wise to come in the mid-afternoon and not in the morning. i mulled the price over for quite sometime. i went out of the building and had my breakfast, then i came back again. but there was no way i was going to pay twenty-five dollars for it. i took a deep breath and thought, i was not my mother's daughter for nothing. now, my mother was great at haggling. i watched her all my young years and she would get a ten-peso item for just one and a half. i used that talent in mexico when my friends and i went there. and it worked everywhere where you can haggle for an item.
so i told the old man, can you just give this to me for seven dollars? i'm just going to use it for my photography project. he stood up and grabbed the bottle from me while pulling out a piece of paper from underneath the table. "oh, what the heck," he said, "you can have it for three dollars." i gave him a big grin. handed him a five and he handed me back a twoney.
now the thing i learned from this bottle was the term "factice dummy". there's a transparent sticker at the bottom and that's what it said. so i looked it up as i never heard of the brand. well, it's not a brand. it's a term meaning "fake". it is a bottle made for the purpose of display. if you want to glam up your vanity, you use a factice. no, @francoise i'm not making this up. :-)
thank you for your kind visits and comments; know that they are truly appreciated.
Good for you! You paid him what it was worth. I would probably have accepted the $25 price tag as I am 1) terrible at haggling and 2) not an antique expert! Good shot!
Well, I'll be damned, I learn something new here every day!! So, this really was a Tester item!! Good for you for haggling...my mom was the same way, and I used to be embarrassed immensely when I was young, but later I found out that I was pretty good at it!
Hi Vikki, love this. Will try to get a photo of my Armani. It was launched in 1982 and I discovered a description on line:
Armani by Giorgio Armani is a Chypre Floral fragrance for women. Armani was launched in 1982. Top notes are aldehydes, pineapple, mint, galbanum, marigold and bergamot; middle notes are cyclamen, tuberose, orchid, orris root, jasmine, lily-of-the-valley, rose and narcissus; base notes are sandalwood, tonka bean, amber, musk, benzoin, oakmoss and cedar.
Brilliant picture and haggling, I am useless at it, but love to hear of someone managing a great deal. Love the new word too, it has a lovely ring to it, will use it at least once today!
Glad you haggled him down. $25 seemed kind of steep but I don't know anything about antiques or bottles. Love the same and style of this one though and it does like it would be a nice bottle to use as a decoration. :) Great shot.
A fav.
