a lot of the houses in the old sections of toronto, like in the danforth area, were built for the war veterans and their families. with the influx of immigrants, the face of neighbourhoods changed, and continue to do so. the old timers move to the suburbs to perhaps re-capture that peaceful environment they once enjoyed. the houses have been sold to new families who renovated so as to give their own mark as their home or simply to cover their mortgage payments by renting the in-laws apartments that mostly came with the house.
this multiplex, once a good-sized bungalow, had been reno'd to house a few one-bedroom or bachelor apartments, including the loft, the access to which is via the old-fashioned iron ladder. i never asked and won't, but i would hazard a guess that the loft is a one-bedroom flat and costs $1,200 or more to rent as it is right across from the subway station. for landlords, a property right next or even a stone's throw from a subway station is like goldmine in their renting pockets. however, it would be a bitch to bring a queen or king size bed into that loft - your mover would perhaps charge extra.
for my get-pushed challenge this week - something that shows different textures, set by @meemakelley kelley: textures of smooth and rough - the glass and the brick walls, the hardness of the iron steps and railings, the softness of the greenery.
thank you for your kind visits and comments; know that they are truly and greatly appreciated.
Think of that view! Interesting commentary about location and area! We we meet, perhaps you can share more as my maiden name is Danforth, and friends once sent me a photo of a sign about Asa Danforth, a relative. There's a small town south of Chicago called Danforth, founded by a great great grandfather, so I'm interested in more!
@Weezilou - there's a write up in wikipedia on 'danforth avenue' that references it being named after one Asa Danforth Jr. whose parents were from worcester, massachussetts (wow! haven't spelled massachusetts in a long time!). you got a long lineage going back ages. which reminds me, the annual "taste of the danforth" is ongoing and it might just be a good time to do some street photography. thank you, my friend.
Actually, that looks like a lovely loft apartment......in my urban living days I would have killed for something like that, especially in a place like NYC (and, they would have charged a lot more, trust me!!)
Glad you explained that this was for your Get Pushed challenge, as I was starting to think that you had moved from industrial structures to architectural ones!
