the capitol building and the washington monument, shown here, along with the white house and the lincoln memorial, for as long as i can remember, from grade school textbooks and history subjects, were and still are symbols of the greatness and the power of america.
we went for a brief visit of the american capital. i had been here a few times in the past and have seen the capitol and the white house, pre-9-11 of course, but never got around to visiting the lincoln memorial. so today, i gave old abe a visit and i was reminded of a declamation that won me a gold medal back in my young school days: 'four score and seven years ago..."
it is a coincidence that today is also the philippine independence day, when the americans liberated us from the 500-year oppression we suffered from the spaniards. we always owed them this independence. sadly, the new generations don't feel the same anymore.
the sun was hot but the winds were high and so there's no reflection of the monument or the memorial on the reflection pool. there were a lot of ducks, though. and some tourists who defied warnings to stay behind a fence and went off just to take their photos. but i like this shot with that young girl reading a book on that ledge.
flying back home tomorrow and hopefully i can play catch up with you all. thank you for your visits and kind comments; know that they are greatly appreciated.
This is just glorious! What a day! Even without photographing the Lincoln Memorial, I know how amazing it is and envy the two of you that you were standing there! Your photo is gorgeous and I'm delighted you're having a nice trip!
They are certainly impressive buildings. The last time I was there was in 2011 and it was just after the cherry blossoms peaked so they still looked quite pretty. Nice shot!
So sorry I missed the two of you. There was a huge gay pride thing going on downtown today just not sure how close to here. Have a safe trip home. Nice capture and love those clouds.
What a neat perspective. I took a school trip to DC and some other areas, like Gettysburg, when I was 13. We saw the Lincoln Memorial but I don't really remember the view looking out. There were probably too many kids for my short self to see over. I hope your trip went well!
And I didn't know that you're Filipino! Now I realize who you reminded me of. When I was growing up we lived across the street from an old Filipino woman, Mary, and she was like a grandmother to me. You remind me of one of her daughters, Ellen, a little bit. She's got a similar spunk :P
I have stood where you stood to take this photo. For now that is as close as we can be to being together. Timing is everything and the perfect time will happen I feel certain. In the meantime I'm so glad you were able to visit my country and get such a beautiful shot of some of the important architecture.
