i had something else in mind for my shot today, but one of my props is missing; spent an inordinate amount of time looking for it and it's somewhere in this place but i just couldn't find it.
so i set up the cup and saucer as i decided i will do light painting. then! there came a knock on the door. nobody ever comes to knock on my door and damn if my quiet night is going to be disturbed by an unexpected guest. who won't stop knocking. i placed the flashlight on the edge of the table. i went to look in the peep hole to see who the intruder was. someone selling magazines. abrasive and aggressive seller. i had said "no, thank you" five times. i hate doing it but i had to use my legal speak. where is your license to solicit; your provincial permit; do you have police clearance; did you get a permit from the building management; all answered with convoluted and nebulous answers. i'm calling the police. still insistent. my last resort: i opened the door to the full extent that the door stopper would allow, showed her my camera and i start to shoot. that sent the bloody woman scurrying.
then a stupid realization: lens cap was on. what the hell!
so back to the cup and saucer. light from the flashlight was hitting the cup. i thought something's looking peculiar. it took me almost a minute to "see" the almost heart shape. and since i've been wanting to do something like this for a while but always ended up an epic fail, this, no matter that it was an accident, is good enough for me.
'tis all.
for the technique challenge, this is a combination of the following techniques already covered in the challenge: low key, b&w, light painting and shadow.
Not only do I love the lighting, I like the happy accident too. (And in the long run, it's good you didn't get the picture of the lady because it sounds like she'd sue you for invasion of privacy or something stupid like that if she saw that you had a picture of her.)
This is brilliant - fav - what a happy accident. when I saw it in feed I didn't immediately think you, but wondered about northy. Well done seeing off the magazine seller.
Love the shot - and the story! I sometimes use the "talking on the mobile phone" facade to ward off solicitors, but may have to change to taking their photo....with lens cap removed for those who might be a bit more observant.
Happy accidents are the best. This is fabulous....love the narrative - I keep the front door closed more often than not and if I'm out back often can't hear the doorbell so don'ttget annoyed by it hahaha
@olivetreeann - she can't sue unless i use it for commercial purposes. also, no invasion of privacy if it shows she's at my door, which means she's invading my privacy. i can also turn the image over to the police and file a complaint. :-)
Great low key BTW !
