the 1-4-3 by summerfield

the 1-4-3

this is so high school! it was a code for the students having "steady" relationships but wanted to keep it a secret for some reason or other. i saw this often enough when signing my friend's slam books. question: "who is your current crush?" and someone would answer: "so-and-so. 1-4-3 ♥♥♥" cheesy, n'est-ce pas? teenagers, my generation was so different from the next one to today's. now they don't say 1-4-3 they just send a selfie, sometimes in an inappropriate pose or worse.

of course, it could also mean, "i hate you" 😂. and that's what i told jimmy abuel in third year high. at first he kept looking back to the girls' row. i was planked by two pretty girls and another 2 behind me. we were guessing who jimmy was looking at and it was the consensus that the apple of his eye was the pretty and fair rosaida who sat in the last row. he was already hit by one of teachers for not paying attention. at the mid-morning break, he came to our group and asked me if he can borrow my literature book, talking to me while his eyes were fixed on rosaida. we knew what was going to happen. he would slip a love letter in the book and when he returned it to me, i'd find his love letter to rosaida and i'd be the messenger. so we girls in our group were planning how to expose him, leader of the gang, i was.

he didn't return the book that day but did so the next morning before the first period started. trying to put one over my group, i snuck out to the library to see jimmy's letter to rosaida. i was a bit surprised that the envelope had my name written on it, and the page with my favourite shakespeare sonnet had 1-4-3 written all over it. what disrespect to my book! so i opened the envelope, still thinking that maybe it's actually for rosaida. no, it was for me. jimmy had a crush on me. so i went to class in a foul mood. during the mid-morning break, i stood on one of the chairs and called jimmy to come over (he's very tall). and as soon as he said "yes, sweeheart" my right fist found his face, right into his right eye. a lot of teasing ensued and that's when i realized i should've just kept quiet. now, everyone knew he had a crush on me and he wrote me a love letter. i should have used my left fist and finished him off.

during the next period, when our geometry teacher asked him why he had a black eye, he said grinning a wide grin, "she loves me!" with the boys chanting 'yeah! yeah! yeah!' in a nod to the beatles' song.
