i had to exchange a pair of shorts before the expiry date so i had to travel to downtown on a quick errand. i pass by these two buildings all the time and only now thought that it would make a good half and half shot, so i shot it. πŸ˜‚

on the way back to the subway station, a well-dressed woman stopped in front of me. she was quite tall and my head was only up to her chest so i was looking at her nostrils πŸ˜‚. she said "do i know you?" i replied, "i don't think so." as i walked on, i thought she looked like one of my college buddies from a long time ago. when i looked back, she was also looking back at me.

my friend's name was elena and she came from a rich family of old money from one of the more prosperous southern islands in the old country. she asked me one day if i was poor. it was a curious question --if you want to make friends with anyone, it's not a question you ask. however, because i came from poor, i said yes i was poor. she said i was different from our other classmates whom she gathered were also poor. after i told her how poor my family was, she asked if she can come to my house because she had never been to one. growing up, she was never permitted to go to other people's homes, most especially the tenant farmers' homes or the homes of their live-out help. so i brought her home after our classes. my mother was still alive at the time, and she was quite amused that this young person from a rich family would want to see how the poor people lived. the semester was already at its end that time. during the summer break, elena would suddenly appear at our house, always bringing some canned goods imported from the states, to give to my mother. sometimes when she came while we are having our meal or about to, my mother would feed her the "poor man's staple" of stinky dried fish, left-over rice (thankfully, not spoilt) with tomato or lettuce harvested from the backyard. i have not thought of elena in forty years, if not for that encounter with that woman this afternoon,

Sich an interesting story! I don’t suppose that woman could really have been Elena. But she brought up memories of that old friend. Very nice half and half!
