We spent the evening in Ottawa, Canada's capital city, so I had an opportunity to take some pics of something neither in our garden nor on a back road! This is a shot of the Rideau Canal at supper time. The canal is 202 km long, with 49 locks, linking the cities of Kingston and Ottawa. It was built over a 6 year period from 1826 to 1832 and is the longest continuously operating canal in North America. It has been designated a National Historic Site (1925), a Canadian Heritage Waterway (2000) and in 2007 it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognizing human creative genius. In the winter months, the Ottawa portion of the canal is maintained as the world's largest skating rink [almost 8 km long].
The main point of our visit to Ottawa was to attend a performance at the National Arts Centre, the building just on the right side of the pic. If you are viewing the pic on a large screen, you can see the flags at the main entry door, just opposite where the boat is making its way north towards the Ottawa River.
Lovely shot--beautiful reflections in the canal, lines and composition. I'm always struck with how clean and beautiful Ottawa is (but then I live near New Orleans, one of North America's dirtiest cities).
What a beautiful shot.. and the reflections!!!! Thank you also for sharing the information.. the next time I travel to Canada this is definitely worth a look see!
