@jenrobcarr Thanks Jenn. No, not related to ducks, other than both being birds in the Aves class. Loons are the size of large ducks and unlike ducks, swim with their stomachs below the water line. They find it difficult to walk but are very strong swimmers so except for nesting time, they pretty much stick to the water. They eat fish whole, head first and swallow small pebbles to help with digestion, then regurgitate the stuff that doesn't digest. Such a unique bird with interesting habits, etc and lots of legends and folklore ....
@sunnygreenwood dear Anne, thanks for that information, just googled 'loon' and wow, what a gorgeous bird and so interesting. There are no Loons in Australia but now it is my goal to see one (one day). Thanks so much!
