Thought I'd throw in a pic of what the Black-capped Chickadees look like when they're enjoying the balmy temps and not all fluffed up to keep warm.
Did you know that they hide seeds and other food items to eat later. Each item is placed in a different spot and the chickadee can remember thousands of hiding places. Every autumn they allow brain neurons containing old information to die, replacing them with new neurons so they can adapt to changes in their social flocks and environment even with their tiny brains. How interesting! Laurie and I saw a red-headed woodpecker this morning on my feeder. I snapped one shot and I've not uploaded yet. I'll let you know if it turned out.
Thanks for all the COOL info on Chickadees! That is amazing about how they recall where their seeds are. And this one is sooo skinny. I think they are so cute when fluffed out, but if they are not cold, I guess they don't bother! I love this pic and the info!
I can't believe the difference in size when they aren't puffed up! I learned alot from this beautiful post of the little chickadee-dee-dee. Your title made me laugh!
Beautiful capture of the Chickadee. The information you shared blows my mind. I had no idea they are so intelligent. During the winter, I was seeing them at my feeder alll the time, but suddenly they are no where to be found. Maybe there finding plenty to eat elsewhere.
so when anyone tells me i'm a bird brain i can give them that information and we'll see who they're callin' bird brain. hahaha! skinny this cutie maybe but his head is quite big for his bird brain! nice shot, anne.
