We visited "Geeseville" with the grandkids and were lucky enough to spot this little Mallard duck and her mate tucked away from the huge crowd of honkers.
I learned from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology today that almost all domestic ducks come from this species. The oldest known Mallard lived to be at least 27 years 7 months old.
I love closeups of shorebirds (well, actually any birds), and this one is stunning. I'm so glad you had such a great day with the grandkids! My little Skylar is coming to spend the whole month of July on the Cape. I have to share her with her dad, but I'm so, so excited to see her.
Gorgeous pov and clarity, Ann. I love these little mallards. The male is gorgeous, but I think that the female has a beauty all her own. Love her colors and markings too. I have taken many of these and am really drawn to the "girls!" :)
What a gorgeous photo of this female mallard, Anne. She looks like she is ready to lay eggs as she is so large in the middle. I did not know they can live to be 27 and most come from this species. Interesting.
