Asplenium rhizophyllum, more commonly known as Walking Fern was one of the rare and interesting things we saw on an outing with the local field naturalists club. It grows on moss-covered limestone. You can see the ridge of stone extending across the top of the pic. The space underneath this outcrop of limestone was the home of a porcupine as evidenced by the giant collection of dried up droppings. We were on a viewing platform that was built at the end of some stairs leading down from the top of the ridge.
This is very interesting. Our woods have similar glacial rocks and moss, so I will have to look for the walking fern. I have never seen one before. We saw a dead porcupine on the road last week on the way home from Maine. We so wished that we could see one alive and in the wild.
Looks like it was a lovely walk. Interesting fern too.
We are heading to Ontario this Saturday, driving out thru the US to Sarnia, across to Kingston then up thru Algonquin to Manitoulin then up over the lakes and home again. Looking forward to doing some exploring and getting some new shots.
