I've shown a number of photos of the Mississippi River and the Pakenham Bridge in the past. Here's an early spring view, before the leaves have opened.
The bridge was the subject of a question on Jeopardy, a popular TV game show.
Here's a copy/paste from the Lanark County website: "The Pakenham five arched stone bridge is believed to be the only one of its kind in the world outside Russia. This beautiful, unique bridge was built in 1901 to accommodate horses and carriages crossing the Mississippi River at the location of the mills in the village of Pakenham. The bridge was built by O’Toole & Keating of Ottawa at a cost of $14,500 and has an overall length of 268 feet, is 22 feet high and is only 25 feet wide. The largest stone used in the construction weighs 5 tonnes."
Such a pretty shot. I love how the water is picking up the blue from the sky. Interesting information, too, Anne. The bridge seems to have held up well.
It's a beautiful bridge Anne and I enjoyed reading the history too. I also didn't realise the Mississippi started in Canada, I always associate it with the US.
Very pretty shot, Anne....and I learned something! You got me doing a little research....I didn't know there was a Mississippi River in Canada. And there's a smaller version of this bridge near us....only 3 arches and one of them spans the road.
