I got home late so it´s a filler from saturday. I thought I´ll show you what a photography envy is all about. This subject was one of the biggest source of envy for me. This is mine, plain and simple. There are some rocks on the right side of the fall, which my friend - unlike me- got to the pic too. I was thinking I´d go back there and try to re-capture this with those rocks. The shooting part isn´t difficult but getting into a right angle is. The problem is that this is a bit tricky place to shoot cos it´s not exacatly easy spot and it demands some balancing on the rocks etc. I have no idea how my friend got that angle from those rocks since in this spot there are some branches in a way but since it can be done, I´m sure I´ll find it too. Maybe I can lure my friend to company me and show me the way. I have very busy schedule this week but I still hope I´ll have a chance to go back as soon as possible.
It´s not as sharp as I would want it to be since it´s shot handheld. I had my tripod with me but it really can´t be used in this spot.
It is a lovely shot though and the slow shutter speed has worked so well with the water. I like what you have done, Susale! You know, if there's more of the rocks to the right in your friend's picture, then there's probably going to be less of the waterfall and the waterfall has to be the subject really.
@pennymilner Thank you Penny, waterfalls are great subject for pics, I can´t wait to see your pic
@sturnus Thank you Carol, yes the slow shutter speed and water, love that combination. here the water is not as smooth as I´d have wanted it to be but I really couldn´t push it any further being handheld and all, this 1/30 really was a bit too slow for handheld already. Yes you have a point there and I kind of started to like this myself now that I´ve looked this a little bit more Let´s see if I can take that another one, so we can really compare them.
I really like your shot, Susale, you got the effect of the slow shutter speed on the water beautifully. Including more in a photograph doesn't always make it better! And, we are all learning here all the time, at least I am. I also think safety must be a consideration, I take a few risks for my photography, but I don't think I'd want to risk falling into a waterfall by balancing too precariously on the rocks.
The thing I really like a lot is the way you've captured the water. It's a perfect blend of movement and blending into a bit of smoothness. The b&w is stunning.
I think you got what you got very well captured, it is a lovely shot. It would be fun for you (and us) though for you to try to get what you have in your mind. But do be careful, saftey first for you and your camera!
I think the water looks wonderful. I often get my best shots when I do so blind. I'm not one to lay on the ground, but I'll put the camera there and shot up at various angles.
@nanderson Thank you Nancy, well it was very b&w to begin with, it was late, 10.00 pm and that spot is a little hidden so there wasn´t that many colors to be seen and turning it to b&w seemed like a okey thing to do. You can call me Susa, I go by that nickname too but also Sussa, if you like, as all my friends call me :)
@tristansmum Thank you Stephanie, I´m here to learn as well and that´s why I sometimes think I have to go back to the same subject again and again till I get it "right". Yes you´re right, it doesn´t always make a pic better, I liked it in this case thou but I know what you mean, safety first and believe me I´m very careful. This is actually a very small fall, more like a stream really and there isn´t that much water but of course those rocks can be a bit dangerous but I´m not planning to do anything reckless:)
@eyesmile Thank you Gena, let´s see if we will have another try on this
@taffy Thank you Taffy, I really would have wanted fot it to be a little more smooth but Icould not make it any smoother as this was shot handheld and I don´t have that steady hand, lol
@bristolrose Thank you Kathryn, I like the effect too, it always makes the water so silky smooth, this is not as smooth as I´d have hoped it would be but without a tripod it really was not possible to get anymore smoothness.
@sansjuan Thank you Nita, yes I thought so too and I thought it would be fun to hear your opinions about it. Yes, I´m always careful, it is not as dangerous place as it may sound, it´s just a little tricky to get there but I believe me and my camera will be perfectly safe, otherwise I wouldn´t go there :)
@eu4ria1 Thank you Ria, yes lol that could have happened too, but this is not really a waterfall, more like a little stream, very small but there´s water thou, so one can get wet...or hit ones head or something but I´ll be careful, if I go back
Hmm, I think this is pretty cool. Yeah a longer shutter time would've been nice and one thing you could carry with you is a bean bag. Put it on the ground and camera sitting on it ---> no camera shakes and cool low POV which always kicks ass :)
Great result for a handheld shot! Please do go back with your friend, and find a secret ingredient for a perfect shot you're aiming for!!!! I'd also love to find out how one can avoid all the clutter that usually gets into your composition when capturing shots like this :)
@lunaksi Thank you Lunaksi, I plan to go back as soon as possible, I´m just so terribly busy all the time but if I manage to take the shot I´m aiming for, I will most definitely show it to you and anxiously wait to hear what you think about it. I believe it´s all about the angle from where you shoot but of course it´s not always possible to remove all the distracting elements without some processing.

Lovely looking waterfall
@janim Ah, kekseliästä, kiitos vinkistä Jani, otamme kokeiluun :)
@ch1ppy_m1nton Thank you Chippy, yes a monipod could be pretty handy too...have to take that into consideration, thank you Chippy
@wind_of_the_sothern_sea Thank you Arefin, I only wish the water could have been a little smoother
@pandora Thank you Susan, it was pretty colourless originally so b&w seemed like a good choice and I think it fits here pretty well
