We were in Dresden today and visited the Palace which is magnificent. Dresden used to be like a larger version of Prague. In February 1945 it was pretty much levelled by US and allied forces. There's nothing pretty about war. There are still some lovely old buildings on the outskirts of the city across the river but it's historic beauty is gone forever.
