19240..........

We visited Exeter to see the sculpture representing the 19240 men who lost their lives on the first day of the Battle of the Somme 1st July 1916. It was very moving hearing a serving officer read all the names including acknowledging those that were never identified. Imelda Staunton and jim Carter were involved in reading poetry and stories from the time. Each 12" figure had been wrapped in a shroud and it took the artist 3 years to complete
Saw this on TV but must have been very moving place to visit.
