I'm not at all nautical, and I am happy to be corrected but I believe the last link or end of a rope is called the bitter end.
The saying comes from when the sailors lowering the anchor came across the rags tied on the bitter end, they knew there was no more rope left, meaning the water was too deep to set anchor.
