I remember a time when all you ever needed was a spare 100w bulb in your "man drawer" and if any bulb in the house died, you would just replace it with your spare one and then you would buy a new one next time you visited the hardware store. I remember these good old 100w filament bulbs lasting years and having a bulb go was a pretty infrequent event.
These days, every light fitting and lamp in my house seems to require a different type of bulb and these new bulbs seem to last about 6 months max. Therefore, I now have a huge cardboard box full of all manner of spare bulbs...... and every time a bulb blows, I discover that I have every type of bulb imaginable except the one I need.
Now don't get me wrong, I am concerned about global warming and agree that we need to reduce our energy consumption....... but when we are no longer allowed to buy 100w bulbs, this becomes a nightmare. If a room needs a 100w bulb to illuminate it properly, then it needs a 100w bulb. In the absence of 100w bulbs, I end up installing a new light fitting which takes two 60w bulbs to achieve the required level of illumination thereby increasing my energy consumption.
Also, these energy saver bulbs that start off dim and take 5 minutes to reach full power are not particularly helpful. I find that I only flip a light switch when I require illumination. I don't have the time to wander around predicting my lighting requirements 5 minutes in advance.
It also seems crazy to me that I can't buy a 100w bulb for my house, but can purchase a 1,000w halogen bulb for my garden lighting.
None of this makes sense to me and I think I am going slowly blind from trying to read in inadequately lit rooms. I may just go off grid and buy lots of candles. :)
Ha ha. This is very timely, I was just thinking yesterday that I could probably open a small light bulb shop because we have so many different types of spare bulb.
You said it all here & I agree with all you say. The bulbs with the element showing like these you have here are very pretty though. My aim is to have one of these lights that require these lovely bulbs one day soon. Great effect but do they give out much light or only for a statement?
I sooo agree with you on this subject. I thought they were meant to last at least 10 years but it's not so I am still buying bulbs!! I never know which one to buy as they keep changing them!! Grrrr
