I wonder what Oscar Wilde would think in these days where talentless people become celebrities for being rich and vacuous or appearing on a TV reality show. or being the obnoxious offspring of aging rock stars.
Interesting thought and not a rare one I guess. I reckon this change of meaning of a star (or celebrity) comes from "us" in a very wide sense. The audience or public. The more of us settle for a lower standard the less one needs to provide in order to enjoy their 15 minutes of fame. And in the same time that 15 minutes is getting way shorter than it was in the late '60s. Some of the 15 minutes which started back then are still ticking. But can you name ten big celebrities of 2010?
