Just over a hundred years ago, The small team of dedicated hardworking gardeners who worked the grounds and gardens at Heligan house, all signed up and went to fight in WWI. There is wall which has their signatures dated 1914.
Sadly most of them didn't return from the war. The house was tenanted out and the garden was abandoned and left to run wild until it's rediscovery in 1990. It has since been restored to it's former glory and is a fascinating place to visit.
I have been a regular visitor since it was first opened to the public and have seem it develop piece by piece, section by section. There is always something new to see and do. We have season tickets these days and visit regularly.
They now have a new team of dedicated hard working gardeners who keep this amazing place in good order for us all to enjoy. They also provide fruit and veg for the on site restaurant which serves up many tasty treats.
@kiwinanna Definitely make time on your next visit and plan to spend a day there. It is a truly fabulous place and there is just so much to explore. :)
