Poor Mary Harris by swillinbillyflynn

Poor Mary Harris

This stone on the outside of the church yard wall in St. Austell has always fascinated me.

The story goes that she was buried outside of the consecrated church land, because at the age of just 21, she was hung as a witch. Apparently a "Cunning Man" from Mevagissey was brought in to determine if she was guilty of witchcraft........ and one can only imagine the the dreadful treatment and indignities she must have suffered at his hands.

It is said that she was hung in what is now the towns main shopping centre and her final words from the gallows were a curse on the whole town. Anybody who knows St. Austell town centre will tell you that was a very effective and long lasting curse...................

It is also interesting to note that the witch laws that could have had you hung or burnt at the stake for using herbal remedies, alternative therapies, ill wishing, and fortune telling, were not repealed until 1951.
Ohhhh....poor lass....

I would have had the same fate back than. You would think we would learn better but with events today, we have learned nothing. Search youtube for The Valley of Sin. One man starts a horrible supposed child crimes that puts many in jail only to discover it never happened. He had indoctrinated the kids to lie. So many lives destroyed.

@photohoot It seems far too easy to stir up a gullible mob who will believe your every word and every lie. America seems particularly prone to it. :(

In Italy we had the last witches trial about the same years, in Nogaredo, near Trient. I believe trialling women for being free and socially active is the most horrible sin the Catholic Church committed over the centuries.

saw a quote recently asking something to the effect of if they were so afraid of witches why werent they even more afraid of the guys that burned them alive!

This just goes to show the fear the male has had and still has for women, females have looked after men and cured all their ills aches and pains. they still fear well educated women as we know still won't let them be educated in some country's. MAYBE if they ruled the world we might not be in the mess we are in now.
From a male that loves women.
