The practice of hammering coins into fallen tree trunks is said to bring good luck. It is a tradition which dates back hundreds of years and is believed to have originated as a way making an offering to the tree spirits or maybe even the old Pagan Lord of the wildwood.
Many ancient coins have been found embedded in the heart of ancient trees up and down the country when they fall and are cut up for firewood. This particular example is in The Lost Gardens of Heligan.
Lovely capture of this great tradition. I've seen this done in the Lake District but I never realised what the history behind it was. thanks for the info.
