Fun with portraits

I love my daughter-in-law, for many reasons! But one is that she "asks" me to take photos of them! Simply my pleasure! I want to get better at portrait photography, so any and all comments are welcome!
It' so lovely that your d-I-l likes having her picture taken, I never get any portrait opps because no one I know wants to pose for the camera!

I like this shot, it's a nice fun capture. I would have maybe tried to get the little baby to look at you or waited until her eyes were more open? Also, I am not too sure about the pose of your son... He looks a little 'awkward' [to me] with his arm out of the picture and the bend in his body?

@stephanies Thank you, Stephanie. All good points! I have read about "posing" but guess I am not comfortable, yet, with telling people "how" to sit and lean and hold their head. It was very hard to get the baby to look at me, as she is only two months old. Thanks so much for your comments! I appreciate the ideas.

No I don't think I would feel comfortable telling people how to stand etc either so I know how you feel about that. This maybe not comparable but when I want the dogs to look at me for a picture I make funny noises - like "woot, woot," or I get my other half to stand behind me and squeak a toy - it gets their attention for 0.5 secs... not sure if something like this would work with a baby though...?

@stephanies I shall certainly try next time. Thanks again for your comments. They are much appreciated!

Following up on a comment from @stephanies — though I haven't tried this yet myself — set your camera to continuous shooting if it has such a "mode," and get more than one shot from one "pose". When the camera starts clicking, maybe that will catch a baby's attention.

FWIW, I'm very uncomfortable posing people, though an early attempt worked out better than I expected, http://365project.org/rhoing/365/2016-03-10 . But like my friends, your son & DIL should be cooperative subjects, so start practicing & experimenting with "poses" and "posing."

As for your son's arm disappearing out of the frame, zoom out or back up: you can always crop later and "fill the frame" in processing if you like.

P.S. Still a nice family portrait.

A beautiful portrait Gary. What wonderful subjects to practice on. And grandkids - well we both know how fun it is to take photos of them!
