The Schuylkill navigation system opened in 1824. It consisted of 23 canals, 32 dams and 109 (later 71) locks. Lock 60 is located at Mont Claire, Pa.
The locktender's house located on the left of this photo was constructed between 1836 and 1839. Made of field stone and then stucco. The boats that carried coal were pulled in the canal by mules.
