Not sand but a small fraction of the taconite tailings that Reserve Mining
dumped into Lake Superior from 1955 until
1980. (65,000 tons of slurry per day) They were taken to court in 1973 but because of various appeals continued to dumb into the lake until 1980. Now the black beach is open to the public ! Has something good come from the massive industrial pollution, are the tailings safe, is this good pr?! See the
boat out in the Lake probably heading in to load some taconite pellets.
Today the slurry is held on land in holding ponds.
I have never heard of taconite either. It is shameful that th drive for profit will so often triumph over the need to safeguard the environment in which we live. Particularly an environment as beautiful as this.
