Sunset on the Lagoon by ubobohobo

Sunset on the Lagoon

At sunset yesterday afternoon I had to pick up hubby from ploughing and caught this scene - an egret, two cormorants, a couple of ducks and a darter all settling down for the night on the Lakes View lagoon. One of the cormorants, silhouetted against the middle stump, has its wings still hung out to dry. Unlike most aquatic birds a cormorant's feathers are not waterproof. This lowers their bouyancy in the water. Out of the water they use oil glands on their rumps when preening to oil their feathers for improved water resistence.
Wow! How unusual to catch so many birds in one photo. I enjoyed your comments.

@vernabeth Had to hide behind a tree and zoom in to the best of my camera's ability. The egret knew I was there because he'd been further down the lagoon and flew up to the security of this group when I arrived.
