Late Afternoon by the River 5

The paper bark tree (melaleuca) makes an interesting subject in the late afternoon sunlight with its curling bark and weeping form. The trees are sometimes used as garden plants and the varying shades of cream and brown bark can be used to create pictures under the skilful hand of artists who carefully strip the bark from the trees. The trees also produce an oil that has various medicinal uses. However in Florida earlier this year I heard it has become a weed in that state. Apparently in the 1880s it was introduced to the USA to help drain the swamplands of the Florida Peninsula. It has now acclimatized and grows in dense thickets that smother native vegetation.

You can certainly see why its common name is 'paper bark ' tree. I didn't know it was a pest in Florida however I did know that eucalypts were every where in California.
