Variety is a children's charity giving away millions of dollars worth of goods and services each month to Australian children with special needs. One big fund raiser for the group is the Annual Dick Smith Variety Bush Bash. The 110 cars in this years B to B Bash left Brisbane yesterday bound for Sydney but travelling via the back roads of Queensland and New South Wales and overnighting in towns starting with B - Barcaldine, Bowral and many places in between until they arrive at Busby's Bore in Centennial Park, Sydney in ten days time. (A distance of about 5000 kilometres). They passed through Ubobo today on their way from Bundaberg to Blackwater(516km). What excitement. The vehicles are all pre-1974 and painted and decorated for the event with their crews all decked out in costume too - The Flintstones, Batman, Dr Who. They're all there. The oldest bush basher is a member of this car, 81 year old, Beryl Driver dressed as a mermaid. She was out having her photo taken with the local kids while waiting for her turn to pull into the 1 petrol bowser in town which was pumping petrol for an hour to get all the cars through. They are all having such fun and raising money so kids can do the same - have fun in spite of their circumstances. Thanks Variety!
I really love this story. It is creativity at its best, and benevolent work done on a shoestring with maximum results. The image in this photo is by itself delightful, but with the story, it's so remarkable.
a super shot1
