Mystery

I don't recall having seen one of these before. What is it? Any ideas? Looks like a mushroom but it's not growing in the ground. It is attached to the grass and is dying from the bottom as the sun hits it.

I wonder if it isn't a plant at all but an insect or insect egg sac? Maybe some plant fungus. In other words, cool but no idea.
