taking flight

Get pushed b&w week coming to an end. Today I thought about the fact I'd never done a low-key shot. So, going for some variation on my b&w theme of the week, I picked our new stove as the backdrop for my favorite coffee mug (The Roasterie of Kansas City) to compose my attempt. I liked how the grating for the stove provided some direction for the eyes to "take off" from. Not sure how effective it was. I'd love critiques!
This is a great idea!

@carolinedreams well, I've enjoyed seeing the world through b&w due to your challenge. I took one each day since last Sunday - would love to know what you think was most effective! Hope to see what you've come up with!

The background is great -- I like the way the grating conveys mechanics, as well as the patterning that takes us to the mug with the plane on it. I think this is one that is more striking the larger you can view it.

Hi Michael. Your photos look great though have only been able to view them through the phone. I have been traveling and had internet issues. So will view and critique when I arrive home later in the day. I have not yet managed a panning shot, but still have today...! I still plan to pan. Will keep you posted.

I love the low light here and the dim shininess of the mug and stovetop. Low key is such a challenge with b&w being so naturally dependent of contrast. Great for setting a mood.

Hi Michael. The panning didn't pan out sadly. I am in the middle of a busy time, moving house, no internet access for a few days etc so perhaps bit off more than I could chew. Thanks for playing get pushed with me anyway- I did enjoy viewing your lovely photos. I still plan to pan at some future point, is on the photographic list. :)

@carolinedreams absolutely no problem! I really appreciate your taking the time to make such insightful comments during such a busy time! When you do have time to try panning, please remember to tag me! Hope everything goes smoothly.

My eyes are first drawn to the spokes of the burner, then to the whitish shadow. Then, ahhhh, to the very white plane on the dark mug. The plane on the mug has very nice detail. It is fun that the more muted lines of the burner lead your eyes to the detail.
