I'm the first to admit I know little about church architecture, but I'm going with "gothic" when I look at the First United Methodist Church in Evanston, IL. I'm not sure if my POV is interesting enough to merit the get pushed challenge for the week (architectural pic with an interesting POV), but I enjoyed trying to find one. Evanston is blessed with many churches and synagogues, so I may have to explore more in the future. What I liked about the black and white is not that it made the structure appear more domineering/grandiose, but that there was supple differences in the shadings of the stonework that I hadn't noticed in color.
@taffy I'm still finding it hard to get interesting POVs (or PsOV, I guess) from large architectural structures. my instinct is to stand really close and point my camera up - so this was an interesting challenge for me.
@vankrey I think the angle worked well. Have you looked at Daniel's (@danielwsc) photos of buildings? He doesn't take them a lot, but the ones he does are always intriguing and you might get some ideas. In January or February, I can't remember which, he focused on negative space and I know some of those featured architecture.
Yes, I would say this is Gothic- even though it does not have as much embellishment on it as say Notre Dame in Paris. You've definitely brought out the best of this building with you pov and the how you've used the light. It really accentuates the stark and clean lines. Well done! Wow- Japanese in High School! Things have sure changed since the offerings of French, Spanish and German of my day!
Nice job. I like this a lot and see several fun things that could be done with this. When I was really learning this style, I found that I would often crop to less than 1/4th of my original pic while focusing on a specific area ... I wonder how this would react to some of that. This is the one that is probably less than 1/6th the original ... http://365project.org/dlaxton/my-better-attem/2013-01-14
