The Old Oak Tree by vernabeth

The Old Oak Tree

This old tree in my yard is leafing out but its trunk is totally covered with Ivy vines. Everyone says the ivy will eventally kill it. The base vines are huge and I'm not sure cutting them would help. It looks as though the roots go into the tree itself. Look how thin and stunted but numerous are the branches growing out at the top.
Trees are beautiful this time of the year, fresh buds are appearing and everything is coming to life again..Lovely shot Beth, i like ivy wrapped around a tree trunk, i didnt know it would kill the tree..

Yes, the vine will kill the tree. You would do well to kill the fine by chipping through the main stem of the vine. It comes down to killing the vine or the vine killing the tree. Easy choice for me. I'd kill the vine.

Wonderful shot! Love the ivy but yes, it will eventually hurt the tree... :((

But it just looked so good. Kill or keep the ivy ?? Tough choice!!!!!

Thank you all for your comments. This tree is 80 to 100 feet tall and the vine goes to the top. If I kill the vine, there will be no way to get it off the tree and the dead vine may look worse than a dead tree. It is a hard choice. It is the largest tree in my front yard.
